Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria also had to beat three other teams to get to this current stage. They began their qualification campaign at the start of July against Belarusian opposition Soligorsk, who they beat 1-0 in both legs for a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Their second match was against Slovenian side Mura, who they drew 0-0 against at the away leg before winning 3-1 at home to go through to the next round. Olympiacos of Greece were the semi-final opponents, where Ludogorets couldn’t quite cling on to their 1-0 lead and drew 1-1 in the first leg, but then won the home leg on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
This will be the first time in history that Swedish side Malmo FF and Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad face each other, and with a place in the Champions League group stage on the line, their first meeting couldn’t have come at a much more important time.
