In the final stage of their respective Champions League qualification campaigns, Malmo host Ludogorets in the first leg of a match that will see the aggregate winner continue through to the group stages of the Champions League.

Malmo have earned their position in this Champions League qualification final by having already knocked out three other teams. They started their campaign against Riga FC of Latvia who they beat 2-1 on aggregate before they went on to play HJK of Finland, who they dismantled 4-3 over the two legs.

A difficult tie against Scottish champions Rangers was up next, and although Rangers were the strong favourites in each of the two legs, Malmo won both games 2-1, winning 4-2 on aggregate to get to this current stage.

Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria also had to beat three other teams to get to this current stage. They began their qualification campaign at the start of July against Belarusian opposition Soligorsk, who they beat 1-0 in both legs for a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Their second match was against Slovenian side Mura, who they drew 0-0 against at the away leg before winning 3-1 at home to go through to the next round. Olympiacos of Greece were the semi-final opponents, where Ludogorets couldn’t quite cling on to their 1-0 lead and drew 1-1 in the first leg, but then won the home leg on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

This will be the first time in history that Swedish side Malmo FF and Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad face each other, and with a place in the Champions League group stage on the line, their first meeting couldn’t have come at a much more important time.

Malmo boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has three injuries in his squad that may hold them back from contention in the first leg against Ludogorets. These players include Ola Toivonen, Jonas Knudsen and Patriot Sejdiu.

Ludogorets have had seven players return from loan for this season, four free transfers into the squad and five cash purchases to a total sum of around £5 million. The only cash sale so far during this transfer window has been centre-forward Jakub Swierczok to Piast Gliwice for a fee of £900k.
