Lithuania, who are ranked 134th in the FIFA World Rankings, host 51st placed Northern Ireland in Group C of the Qatar World Cup 2022 qualifiers on Thursday the 2nd of September 2021.
Lithuania did not take part in Euro 2020 this summer after failing to qualify back in 2019. In their group, which consisted of qualifying nations Ukraine and Portugal, they lost 7 of their 8 matches and drew the other. The draw was in their home leg against 96th FIFA ranked Luxembourg.
Lithuania’s World Cup qualification campaign hasn’t begun very well either. So far, they’ve lost against both Switzerland and Italy, however, these are the strongest two teams in the group and they’ll be pleased with the 1-0 and 2-0 scorelines.
Northern Ireland also failed to qualify for the Euro 2020 tournament, although they did come much closer than their Baltic counterparts. After finishing third in their group behind Germany and the Netherlands on 13 points, they had the opportunity to progress through the play-offs. They beat Bosnia & Herzegovina in their first game but lost 1-2 to Slovakia after extra time in the second.
World Cup qualification hasn’t been smooth sailing for Northern Ireland so far, although they have only played two of their fixtures. Italy were their first opponents where two first-half goals separated the two sides, followed by a home fixture against Bulgaria which ended in a goalless draw.
Head to head, Lithuania and Northern Ireland have only faced each other on two competitive occasions, with Northern Ireland technically getting the better of the two sides. During the World Cup qualification process in 1992, the sides drew 2-2, then in the reverse fixture in 1993, Northern Ireland won the match 0-1.
