History of Doncaster Racecourse

Doncaster is Britain’s oldest continuously used racecourse, with official meetings beginning in the 16th century. Its believed that the racing started at the venue around 1595. However, shortly after that, races were limited in number due to rowdy crowds. To formalise racing and further control attendance, the racetrack was officially founded in 1614.

Doncaster is a primarily flat, left-handed race track in an almost pear-like shape. It’s probably the levelest track in the country and is extremely quick. Being a renowned easy track, it provides an excellent learning experience for newcomers.

Both flat racing and National Hunt races happen at Doncaster. Flat races can be run from 1000 metres up to 1600 metres. There is minimal draw bias, partly due to superb drainage, which results in a uniformly smooth and fair track. Horse’s are known to comfortably travel further distances than their previous form would suggest possible – all due to the surface. Doncaster has been bought by the Arena Racing Company, which is responsible for events at the venue.

One of the two showcase fixtures, the Doncaster Cup, is Grade 2 stayers race, held each September, run over 3600 metres. It’s the third leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown (the other two being the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup). Winners of the race gain automatic entry into the legendary Melbourne Cup. The other highlight at the Track, the St. Leger Stakes, is a group one for 3-year-old colts and fillies run over a unique distance of 2921 metres. It’s the final leg of the English Triple Crown (the other two being the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks).
