Quick read: The best gambling stories are true ones. A soldier turned a 25p spin into £13.2 million, a Finnish player won nearly €17.9 million on one spin, and card players have taken casinos for millions with skill alone. Here are seven real stories, plus what each one teaches about luck, odds and knowing when to walk away. For more, see the richest professional gamblers and our collection of gambling quotes.
1. The soldier who won £13.2 million from 25p

In October 2015, British soldier Jon Heywood hit the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot with a 25p stake and won £13.2 million, one of the largest online slot wins ever at the time. Mega Moolah has paid several eight-figure jackpots since. Learn how these prizes build up in our progressive jackpot guide.

2. The Finnish player’s €17.86 million spin

In January 2013, a Finnish player won €17,861,813 on NetEnt’s Mega Fortune at Paf Casino. It was a world record for an online progressive jackpot at the time.
3. The €7.5 million Hall of Gods jackpot

A Norwegian player won a €7.5 million jackpot on NetEnt’s Norse-themed Hall of Gods slot, one of the biggest wins in the game’s history.
4. The MIT blackjack team
In the 1980s and 1990s, groups of students and graduates linked to MIT used card counting and team play to beat blackjack tables around the world. Their story inspired the book Bringing Down the House and the 2008 film 21. Card counting is legal, but casinos can ask counters to leave.
5. Don Johnson’s Atlantic City run
In 2011, professional gambler Don Johnson won about $15 million playing blackjack at three Atlantic City casinos. His edge came from negotiating rules and loss rebates that tipped the maths in his favour, not from luck.
6. Phil Ivey and edge sorting
Poker star Phil Ivey won around £7.7 million playing Punto Banco at London’s Crockfords in 2012 using a technique called edge sorting. The casino refused to pay, and in 2017 the UK Supreme Court ruled in the casino’s favour. It is a reminder that how you win matters.
7. Archie Karas: the biggest run, and the biggest fall
In the early 1990s, Archie Karas reportedly turned a small stake into tens of millions of dollars in Las Vegas through poker, pool and dice, then lost almost all of it within weeks. Accounts of the exact figures vary, but the lesson doesn’t: set a stop point and keep it.

What these stories teach
- Jackpot wins are pure luck, and they are extremely rare. Play for fun, not to get rich.
- Skill wins, like card counting or negotiating better rules, come from maths and discipline.
- Set a budget and a stop point. Archie Karas’s story shows why.
