The last time an in-form Manchester United side faced a lacklustre, mismatched Southampton squad it was a recipe for disaster for the south coast club at Old Trafford.

Southampton did what Southampton do in their first game of the season away at Everton. After taking the lead and having an impressive first half, The Saints threw away yet another winning position and lost the match 3-1, failing to field any impactful subs to assist with defending as Everton began to look more and more dangerous.

After this Premier League match against The Red Devils, Southampton travel to Newport County in the mid-week for an EFL Cup match they’ll be expecting to win. If Southampton have been good at one thing in recent years, it’s cup runs.

Manchester United will have been ecstatic with their Premier League campaign opener at home against fierce rivals Leeds United, winning 5-1 with four of their goals coming as a response to Leeds’ early second-half equaliser.

United have one of the easiest starts to the Premier League season as they could have asked for, playing Leeds United, Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Everton before they face any of last season’s top six clubs.

Head to head, Southampton fans won’t want to be reminded of the (9-0) scoreline in the defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture last time out. Before this particular match, however, Southampton have managed some very close scorelines against Man United, who have often had to leave it until Fergie time to snatch a victory.

Odds For Southampton v Manchester United

As you’d probably expect based on recent form, Manchester United are the favourites to win this match at St Mary’s, although the current price for a Southampton upset aren’t quite as high as some may have predicted.

Already thinking about who might be the outright winner of the Premier League this season? The season began with Manchester City favourites to win it again, followed by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, and not much has changed as of yet:

Southampton v Manchester United Teams

Southampton have had another departure-ridden transfer window, again losing a highly valuable player in the form of Southampton fan Danny Ings, who was sold to Aston Villa for a fee of around £32 million after being linked with Manchester City. The Saints have also lost centre-back Jannik Vestergaard to Leicester City, goalkeeper Angus Gunn to Norwich City and defensive-midfielder Mario Lemina to OGC Nice for a total combined figure of around £25 million.

Southampton have also spent their transfer funds for once, though, bringing in centre-forward Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers for a fee of around £16 million, left-back Romain Perraud from Brest for around £11 million, Valentino Livramento from Chelsea U23’s for a fee of just over £5 million and centre-back Dynel Simeu, also from Chelsea’s U23’s, for £1.5 million.

Manchester United have captured their targets as planned this transfer window, signing the likes of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £76.5 million, Raphael Verane from Real Madrid for a fee of £36 million and goalkeeper Tom Heaton from Aston Villa on a free transfer.

United have only essentially lost two players this summer, both of which are goalkeepers, with Sergio Romero being released into the wild with hopes of being picked up by another club and Joel Pereira heading off to Eredivisie side RKC Waalwijk on a free transfer.

Heading into this game away at Southampton this Sunday afternoon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could well be without a number of players due to injury, including Bailly, Cavani, Lingard, Rashford and Telles, with Dean Henderson and Phil Jones also questionable.
