Southampton travel to Goodison Park in Everton on Saturday the 14th of August for each team’s first game of the new Premier League season.

Everton had a fairly tame pre-season campaign this summer, welcoming various South American opposition to Goodison Park in the form of Millonarios from Colombia and U.N.A.M from Mexico, beating both in a three-day period. Everton then visited Old Trafford where they were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United.

Everton will be fairly pleased with their start to the Premier League season, which could have been much harder. They face Southampton, Leeds, Brighton, Burnley, Aston Villa and Norwich before they face any of the big six. This may however put pressure on them to get as many points on the board during this period.

Southampton played four pre-season friendlies this summer, which included a short tour of Wales where they beat Cardiff 4-0 and Swansea 3-1, before returning to St Mary’s to welcome Spanish side Levante, who they then also beat. The Saints’ final pre-season game was a loss against another Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.

Southampton’s play three of the top four sides by the 2nd of September, so if they have any hope of improving on last year’s final position, they’ll need to pick up a few wins in between these difficult games.

Head to head last season, Southampton won the home leg at St. Mary’s 2-0, then Everton won the reverse fixture at Goodison Park 1-0 in March.

Everton v Southampton Teams

Everton have had a very quiet transfer window, indicating that there’s either some last-minute offers planned or that manager Rafael Benitez feels he can work with what he’s already got. The only cash in and out of the club so far has been in the £1.8 million purchase of Demarai Gray from Bayer Leverkusen and in the £900k sale of left-winger Bernard to Sharjah FC.

Sources indicate that Calvert-Lewin, Gbamin, Gomes and Kean are questionable for this match against Southampton on Saturday, but none are yet officially ruled out.

Southampton have had a very busy transfer window and their fans would have expected nothing less. It’s rarely a quiet time of the year for the south-coast club.

After cashing in for Danny Ings who went to Aston Villa for over £30 million, as well as Angus Gunn who went to Norwich for a fee of around £5 million and Mario Lemina who went to Nice for a similar figure, Southampton have purchased Adam Armstrong for £15.93 million, Romain Perraud for £10.8 million, Valentino Livramento for just over £5 million and also secured a permanent move for Theo Walcott on a free transfer from Everton.

After an injury-induced nightmare for Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl last season, he’ll be pleased to announce that it’s only currently young Will Smallbone on the doctor’s bench heading into the start of the season.
