How esports betting works
- Match winner: pick which team wins the series.
- Map handicap: back a favourite to win by two maps, or an underdog to lose by no more than one.
- Totals: bet on the number of maps, rounds or kills.
- Live betting: odds update during the match. Watch the stream, because odds can move fast.
- Outrights: bet on who wins a whole tournament.

Map handicaps explained
In a best-of-three series, a -1.5 map handicap on the favourite wins only if they take the series 2–0. A +1.5 map handicap on the underdog wins if they take at least one map. Handicaps give better odds on favourites and a safety net on underdogs.
Does the series format change the odds?
Yes, a lot. The longer the series, the more often the stronger team wins. Take a team that wins 60% of individual maps against its opponent. Treating each map as independent, this is how often it wins, and the fair odds with no bookmaker margin:

Two lessons. Best-of-one matches are close to a coin flip even between unequal teams, so upsets there are normal, not a sign of anything suspicious. And if a bookmaker offers the favourite at -1.5 maps for much less than about 2.78 in a match like this, the price is poor. Real maps aren’t fully independent (map picks and momentum matter), so use the table as a guide, not a formula.
How much do bookmakers charge on esports bets?
It varies by site and match, and is usually higher on small leagues, but you can work it out yourself from the odds in seconds. Say a CS2 match is priced at 1.85 for Team A and 1.95 for Team B:
- Turn each price into a chance: 1 ÷ 1.85 = 54.1% and 1 ÷ 1.95 = 51.3%.
- Add them: about 105.3%. The extra 5.3% is the bookmaker’s margin.
- Remove it to get the fair prices: 105.3 ÷ 54.1 = 1.95 for Team A and 105.3 ÷ 51.3 = 2.05 for Team B.

Esports betting tips
- Stick to titles you watch: knowing the teams, map pools and current patch matters more than in most sports.
- Check roster news: stand-ins and roster changes can swing a match. Check team news before you bet.
- Mind the format: a best-of-one match is far more unpredictable than a best-of-three.
- Compare odds: esports prices can differ a lot between bookmakers, especially in smaller leagues.
- Set a budget: stake a small, fixed share of your bankroll and never chase losses.

How does esports betting work?
You pick an outcome in a professional video game match, such as which team wins, and the bookmaker pays you at the agreed odds if you’re right. The main markets are match winner, map handicaps, totals of maps, rounds or kills, live bets during play, and outrights on who wins a tournament. Every price includes a bookmaker margin, usually higher on small leagues.
Is esports betting profitable?
For most people, no. Every price includes a bookmaker margin (about 5% in our CS2 example above), so you have to beat that edge just to break even. Comparing odds at two or three sites, sticking to games you follow and remembering that best-of-one matches are close to coin flips all help, but treat betting as entertainment with a fixed budget.
Can esports players bet on their own matches?
Not at events covered by integrity rules. The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) bans players from betting on matches at its member events, with longer bans for betting on their own games or against their own team. In January 2021 it suspended 35 Counter-Strike professionals for betting offences, and said those bans were not for match-fixing.
Is esports betting rigged?
Most professional matches are not, but match-fixing risk is higher in obscure, low-profile matches. Integrity bodies such as ESIC investigate betting offences and ban players for them. Stick to established tournaments and licensed bookmakers, and remember that upsets are normal: a team that wins 60% of maps still loses a single map 40% of the time.
