How live dealer games work
A live dealer game is streamed in real time from a studio or, sometimes, a land-based casino. The dealer handles real cards, wheels and shoes, and cameras plus card-reading technology turn each result into data on your screen. You place bets through the on-screen interface during a betting window, and the dealer runs the round when it closes. Most tables also have a chat box so you can talk to the dealer.
The biggest live casino studios are run by game providers such as Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live. The casino you play at hosts their tables, so the same game can appear at many casinos.
Live games compared by house edge
| Game | House edge / RTP | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | About 0.5% with basic strategy | Lowest edge if you follow basic strategy; side bets have a much higher edge |
| Baccarat | 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player | Avoid the Tie bet (about 14.4% edge) |
| European roulette | 2.7% | Single zero; avoid American (double-zero) roulette at 5.26% |
| Lightning Roulette | RTP about 97.1% to 97.3% | Straight-up wins pay 30:1 instead of 35:1, but 1 to 5 numbers get 50x to 500x multipliers each round |
| Crazy Time | RTP up to 96.08% | A money-wheel game show with four bonus games: Coin Flip, Cash Hunt, Pachinko and Crazy Time |
Lower house edge means you lose less on average over time. It does not mean you will win in a single session. New to RTP? See our RTP guide.
Live blackjack
Live blackjack is the most popular table game for a reason: with basic strategy, the house edge is around 0.5%. Tables often fill up, so many studios run “infinite” versions where any number of players make their own decisions on the same dealt hand. Watch out for side bets such as Perfect Pairs and 21+3, which are fun but carry a much higher house edge than the main game.
Live roulette and Lightning Roulette
Always pick European roulette (single zero, 2.7% house edge) over American roulette (double zero, 5.26%). Lightning Roulette from Evolution adds random multipliers of 50x to 500x to between one and five numbers each round. To pay for those multipliers, normal straight-up wins pay 30:1 instead of 35:1.
Live baccarat
Baccarat is a pure game of chance with a low house edge: about 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player, even after the usual 5% commission on Banker wins. The Tie bet pays more but has a house edge of around 14%, so most players avoid it. Speed baccarat tables shorten each round, which means more hands per hour, so keep an eye on your budget.
Live game shows
Game shows such as Evolution’s Crazy Time are built around a large money wheel and bonus rounds with multipliers. They are entertaining, but their RTPs are lower than classic table games (Crazy Time tops out at 96.08% on its best bet), and results swing a lot. Treat them as entertainment and set a firm budget.
Live casino bonuses: read the small print
Many casino welcome bonuses exclude live dealer games or count them at a reduced rate towards wagering, and playing excluded games while a bonus is active can put your bonus winnings at risk. If you mainly play live games, look for cashback offers or live-specific promotions, or play without a bonus. Our welcome bonus guide explains wagering contributions.
How to choose a live dealer casino
- Licence and payouts: pick a licensed casino with a track record of paying out. See how we rate casinos.
- Studios and tables: check that the casino carries the providers and games you want, at table limits that suit your budget.
- Connection: live streams need a stable connection. If your connection drops, a bet you have already placed usually still plays out; check the casino’s terms and your bet history.
- Bonus terms: check how live games count towards wagering before you accept a bonus.
- Responsible gambling tools: deposit limits and session reminders are especially useful with fast live games. See our responsible gambling page.
Live dealer casino FAQs
Are live dealer games rigged?
Live games from major studios use real cards, wheels and dealers, filmed in real time, and licensed casinos are audited. Play at licensed casinos with a good payout record.
Which live casino game has the best odds?
Blackjack, at about 0.5% house edge with basic strategy, followed by baccarat on the Banker bet (about 1.06%) and European roulette (2.7%).
Can I play live dealer games on my phone?
Yes. Live casinos work in mobile browsers and casino apps, though a stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection gives the best stream.
Can I use a bonus on live dealer games?
Sometimes. Many bonuses exclude live games or count them at a low percentage towards wagering. Check the bonus terms first.
What happens if my connection drops mid-hand?
A bet you have already placed usually still plays out, and some games make a default decision for you if you don’t reconnect in time. Check your bet history and the casino’s terms, and contact support if anything looks wrong.
Important: check your local laws before you play
Online gambling laws differ from country to country, and in some places it is restricted or not permitted at all. Check that online gambling is legal where you live and that the casino accepts players from your country. You must be 18 or older (or the legal gambling age in your country, if higher). Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
