The biggest slot win ever is $39.71 million on Megabucks at the Excalibur, Las Vegas, in March 2003. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest slot machine win. The player, a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles, had put about $100 into the machine. Guinness gives $39,713,982.25 and the Las Vegas Sun gives $39,710,826.36, so we round to $39.71 million.

All six are Megabucks, a progressive jackpot linked across many Nevada casinos, which is why its pool grew so large. The Desert Inn win went to a Las Vegas cocktail waitress who stayed anonymous. For Bally’s, the Las Vegas Sun gives both March and May 2002, so we show the year only.

The biggest online slot win ever is €38,461,200.95, won on Wheel of Wishes on Games Global’s WowPot network on 20 December 2023. It is about twice the size of the next biggest online win, €19.43 million on Absolootly Mad: Mega Moolah in 2021.

What the record wins have in common
We compared the 15 wins in the two tables. Three patterns stand out:
- They are all progressive jackpots. Every win on both lists came from a jackpot pool fed by many players at once: Megabucks in Nevada, and Mega Moolah, WowPot, Mega Fortune and Hall of Gods online.

- Small bets have won big. Of the online wins where two sources give the stake, the bets were 25p, 75 cents and £1.50. Many jackpot slots still give bigger bets a better chance of reaching the jackpot game, so check the rules in the game’s info screen.
How likely is a record slot win?
Very unlikely. The odds of hitting a top progressive jackpot are long, and every spin is random, so a big jackpot is never “due”; see our slot machine myths guide.
