How do live dealer games work?

A live dealer game is streamed in real time from a studio or, sometimes, a land-based casino. The dealer handles real cards, wheels and shoes, and cameras plus card-reading technology turn each result into data on your screen. You place bets through the on-screen interface during a betting window, and the dealer runs the round when it closes. Most tables also have a chat box so you can talk to the dealer.

The biggest live casino studios are run by game providers such as Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live. The casino you play at hosts their tables, so the same game can appear at many casinos.

Live games compared by house edge

GameHouse edge / RTPNotes
BlackjackAbout 0.5% with basic strategyLowest edge if you follow basic strategy; side bets have a much higher edge
Baccarat1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on PlayerAvoid the Tie bet (about 14.4% edge)
European roulette2.7%Single zero; avoid American (double-zero) roulette at 5.26%
Lightning RouletteRTP about 97.1% to 97.3%Straight-up wins pay 29:1 instead of 35:1, but 1 to 5 numbers get 50x to 500x multipliers each round
Crazy TimeRTP up to 96.08%A money-wheel game show with four bonus games: Coin Flip, Cash Hunt, Pachinko and Crazy Time

Lower house edge means you lose less on average over time. It does not mean you will win in a single session. New to RTP? See our RTP guide.

Live blackjack

Live blackjack is the most popular table game for a reason: with basic strategy, the house edge is around 0.5%. Tables often fill up, so many studios run “infinite” versions where any number of players make their own decisions on the same dealt hand. Watch out for side bets such as Perfect Pairs and 21+3, which are fun but carry a much higher house edge than the main game.

Live roulette and Lightning Roulette

Always pick European roulette (single zero, 2.7% house edge) over American roulette (double zero, 5.26%). Lightning Roulette from Evolution adds random multipliers of 50x to 500x to between one and five numbers each round. To pay for those multipliers, normal straight-up wins pay 29:1 instead of 35:1.

Live baccarat

Baccarat is a pure game of chance with a low house edge: about 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player, even after the usual 5% commission on Banker wins. The Tie bet pays more but has a house edge of around 14%, so most players avoid it. Speed baccarat tables shorten each round, which means more hands per hour, so keep an eye on your budget.

Live game shows

Game shows such as Evolution’s Crazy Time are built around a large money wheel and bonus rounds with multipliers. They are entertaining, but their RTPs are lower than classic table games (Crazy Time tops out at 96.08% on its best bet), and results swing a lot. Treat them as entertainment and set a firm budget.

Live casino bonuses: read the small print

Many casino welcome bonuses exclude live dealer games or count them at a reduced rate towards wagering, and playing excluded games while a bonus is active can put your bonus winnings at risk. If you mainly play live games, look for cashback offers or live-specific promotions, or play without a bonus. Our welcome bonus guide explains wagering contributions.

How to choose a live dealer casino

  • Licence and payouts: pick a licensed casino with a track record of paying out. See how we rate casinos.
  • Studios and tables: check that the casino carries the providers and games you want, at table limits that suit your budget.
  • Connection: live streams need a stable connection. If your connection drops, a bet you have already placed usually still plays out; check the casino’s terms and your bet history.
  • Bonus terms: check how live games count towards wagering before you accept a bonus.
  • Responsible gambling tools: deposit limits and session reminders are especially useful with fast live games. See our responsible gambling page.

How we checked this

  • Payout times come from our own test withdrawals: 1win in June 2026 and iWild in March 2026. Scores are from our casino reviews.
  • Blackjack at about 0.5% with basic strategy: Wizard of Odds (0.43% under Atlantic City rules) and DeucesCracked.
  • Baccarat at 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player and about 14.4% on Tie: Wizard of Odds and DeucesCracked.
  • Roulette at 2.7% (single zero) and 5.26% (double zero): our own maths (1 in 37 and 2 in 38) and Wizard of Odds.
  • Lightning Roulette paying 29:1 on plain straight-up wins, with 1 to 5 numbers getting 50x to 500x and an RTP of 97.10% to 97.30%: OLBG and Effortless Math.
  • Crazy Time at up to 96.08% RTP: OLBG and DeucesCracked, which puts the best bet (number 1) at 96.08%.
  • Blackjack seat choice not changing your long-run odds: Las Vegas Advisor and Casino.org, which quotes a UNLV casino management professor.

Last checked: 12 October 2026, when we worked out the roulette house edges ourselves and checked every other figure on this page against at least two independent sources. That check corrected the Lightning Roulette straight-up payout to 29:1. We added the blackjack seat answer on 14 October 2026 after checking it against two independent sources.

Live dealer casino FAQs

Are live dealer games rigged?

Live games from major studios use real cards, wheels and dealers, filmed in real time, and licensed casinos are audited. Play at licensed casinos with a good payout record.

Which live casino game has the best odds?

Blackjack, at about 0.5% house edge with basic strategy, followed by baccarat on the Banker bet (about 1.06%) and European roulette (2.7%).

Can I play live dealer games on my phone?

Yes. Live casinos work in mobile browsers and casino apps, though a stable Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection gives the best stream.

Can I use a bonus on live dealer games?

Sometimes. Many bonuses exclude live games or count them at a low percentage towards wagering. Check the bonus terms first.

Does it matter which seat you choose at a live blackjack table?

Not for your odds. Advice to “choose the right seat at the table” is mostly a myth: over the long run, your seat and other players’ decisions don’t change your expected result. The game’s rules and your own decisions do, so pick a table with good rules and play basic strategy.

What happens if my connection drops mid-hand?

A bet you have already placed usually still plays out, and some games make a default decision for you if you don’t reconnect in time. Check your bet history and the casino’s terms, and contact support if anything looks wrong.

Important: check your local laws before you play

Online gambling laws differ from country to country, and in some places it is restricted or not permitted at all. Check that online gambling is legal where you live and that the casino accepts players from your country. You must be 18 or older (or the legal gambling age in your country, if higher). Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
