How do slot machines really work?
Every online slot uses a random number generator (RNG), so each spin is independent: the last spin has no effect on the next. Each game also has an RTP (return to player), the share of all bets it pays back over millions of spins. A 96% RTP means the house edge is 4%.
Here is what that means in practice. If you make 1,000 spins at $1, you bet $1,000 in total. At 96% RTP, the average result over many players would be about $960 back, a $40 loss. Any one session can land far above or below that, which is why some people win, but the average always favours the casino.

How much does RTP change what your spins cost?
A lot: a 94% slot costs six times as much per spin, on average, as a 99% one. We worked it out with one sum, expected loss = spins × stake × (100% − RTP), for $1 spins:

The last column comes from the same sum turned around: if you keep replaying your balance until it is gone, you bet about $100 ÷ house edge in total, on average. At 4% that is $2,500, or 2,500 spins of $1. Volatility changes how bumpy the ride is, not these averages: a high-volatility game can end a $100 budget in 200 spins or turn it into $1,000.
