Online scratch cards are instant-win casino games whose result is fixed the moment you buy the card, and many pay back far less than people expect: Pragmatic Play’s Wolf Gold Scratchcard returns 67.03% to 74.48% of stakes over time, about the same as a paper lottery ticket.
Quick answer: you buy a virtual card at a fixed price (from €0.10 to about €5 on the games below), scratch it or press “reveal all”, and win if you match the symbols shown in the pay table. A random number generator (RNG) decides the result before you scratch, so the way you scratch changes nothing. The return to player (RTP) varies a lot from card to card and even between casinos, so open the game’s info screen and check it before you play.
Last checked: 11 October 2026, when we checked each fact against at least two independent sources. We list RTPs from game databases and providers; we did not run our own long-term test of these cards.

How do online scratch cards work?
An online scratch card works like a paper one, except a computer draws the result. Here is what happens when you play:
- Pick a card. Most online scratch cards have one fixed ticket price, for example €0.10 for Hacksaw Gaming’s Chaos Crew Scratch or €5 for Scratch Platinum.
- Buy it. The RNG decides at that moment whether the card wins and how much.
- Scratch. Rub the panels with your mouse or finger, or press “reveal all”. Both show the same, already decided result.
- Match the symbols. On most cards, three matching symbols win the prize shown for that symbol; the pay table in the game explains the exact rule.
- Collect. Wins are added to your balance straight away.
Because each card takes seconds, you can play dozens in a few minutes. That speed is the main risk, so set a limit first with our gambling budget calculator.

Online scratch card games compared
Here are six well-known casino scratch cards from Pragmatic Play and Hacksaw Gaming, two providers that make many of them. Each figure was found in at least two sources; where providers sell several RTP versions, we give the range.
| Scratch card | Provider | Ticket price | RTP | Top prize |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf Gold Scratchcard | Pragmatic Play | £4 | 67.03% to 74.48% | 250,000x (£1,000,000) |
| Gold Rush Scratchcard | Pragmatic Play | Varies by casino | 71.72% to 79.69% | 250,000x |
| Diamond Strike Scratchcard | Pragmatic Play | €1 | 76.55% to 85.06% | 100,000x |
| Chaos Crew Scratch | Hacksaw Gaming | €0.10 | 60.12% to 92.28% (versions) | 100,000x |
| Cash Scratch | Hacksaw Gaming | €4 | Up to 92.01% | 100,000x |
| Scratch Platinum | Hacksaw Gaming | €5 | 76.67% | 100,000x |
Two things stand out. First, the top prizes are huge: 100,000 or 250,000 times the ticket price. Second, the RTPs are low compared with most slots, because a big share of the money goes into those rare top prizes. Hacksaw Gaming and Pragmatic Play both offer casinos several RTP versions of the same card, so the same game can pay back less at one site than at another. If a card’s info screen shows an RTP at the bottom of the ranges above, pick another card or another casino.
Pragmatic Play scratchcards
Pragmatic Play released a set of scratchcards in early 2020, each based on one of its slots: Wolf Gold, Gold Rush, Diamond Strike and Queen of Gold among them. The best known is Wolf Gold Scratchcard. On 1 June 2020 a PlayOJO player won its £1,000,000 top prize, as Pragmatic Play and SiGMA both reported. Gold Rush Scratchcard (released February 2020) and Diamond Strike Scratchcard (February 2020) follow the same simple “match three” design.
If you like the theme but want better odds, the Wolf Gold slot is the original game the scratchcard is based on.
Online vs lottery scratch cards
| Online casino scratch cards | Lottery scratch cards | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you buy | Online casinos | Shops and official lottery apps |
| Price | About €0.10 to €5 for the cards above | Printed on the ticket, e.g. £5 for the UK Beat The Chasers card |
| Pay-back | About 60% to 92%, set by the game version | Massachusetts Lottery paid out 74.07% of sales in prizes in FY2025 (all games) |
| Odds shown | RTP in the game’s info screen | Overall odds on the ticket, e.g. 1 in 3.52 on the UK £5 Beat The Chasers card (June 2026) |
| Speed | Seconds per card, unlimited cards | One physical ticket at a time |
Neither kind is a good bet in money terms. Depending on the version, an online card can pay back more or less than a lottery ticket, and online cards are much faster, so losses add up quicker. For a lottery-style game with clearer odds, see our keno odds guide.
Are online scratch cards rigged?
No, not at licensed casinos, but they are built to keep part of every stake. The result of each card comes from a random number generator, and testing labs such as GLI, iTech Labs and eCOGRA check that RNGs produce fair, unpredictable results. What is not random is the RTP: the game is designed to pay back, say, 76% over millions of cards, and the casino picks which RTP version it runs. Past cards also tell you nothing about the next one; a long losing run does not mean a win is due (the gambler’s fallacy). Our slot machine myths guide covers the same RNG myths for slots.
Can you win real money on online scratch cards?
Yes, you can win real money, and the occasional win is life-changing (the £1,000,000 Wolf Gold Scratchcard win in 2020). But over many cards you should expect to lose the gap between your stakes and the RTP. Here is what that means on Diamond Strike Scratchcard at €1 a card:
| RTP version | Cards bought | Total staked | Expected return | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 76.55% | 100 | €100 | €76.55 | €23.45 |
| 85.06% | 100 | €100 | €85.06 | €14.94 |
The same 100 cards can cost you about €8.50 more on the lower RTP version. Expected figures are long-run averages; any one session can end higher or lower.
Tips for playing online scratch cards
- Check the RTP first. It is in the game’s info or help screen. Between versions of the same card it differs by 7 to 9 percentage points on Pragmatic Play’s cards, and by far more on Chaos Crew Scratch.
- Read the pay table. It shows what each symbol pays. A top prize of 100,000 times the ticket price is, by design, extremely rare.
- Set a card limit, not just a money limit. At seconds per card, 100 cards take only a few minutes.
- Avoid auto-buy features if the game has them, so every purchase is a choice.
- Bonus terms may count scratch cards differently from slots. Check the wagering rules, and use our wagering requirement calculator before you claim.
- Want better odds? Games such as blackjack and baccarat keep a much smaller share; see our games with the lowest house edge.
Where to play online scratch cards
Scratch cards sit in the casino lobby next to slots, usually under “instant win” or “scratch”. These casinos we rate carry games from both Pragmatic Play and Hacksaw Gaming, each confirmed by two independent reviews. Libraries change and differ by country, so search the lobby for the card you want before you deposit, and check that online gambling is legal where you live.

Online scratch card FAQs
Are online scratch cards rigged?
No. At licensed casinos the result comes from a random number generator tested by labs such as GLI, iTech Labs or eCOGRA. They are designed to keep part of every stake, though: many online scratch cards have an RTP between about 60% and 92%.
Can you win real money on online scratch cards?
Yes. Real-money cards pay real prizes, and a PlayOJO player won £1,000,000 on Wolf Gold Scratchcard on 1 June 2020. Over many cards you should still expect to lose money, because the RTP is below 100%.
What is the RTP of online scratch cards?
It depends on the card and the version the casino runs. In our comparison it ranges from 60.12% (the lowest Chaos Crew Scratch version) to 92.28% (its highest), with Pragmatic Play’s cards between 67.03% and 85.06%.
Does it matter if I scratch by hand or press reveal all?
No. The result is decided by the RNG when you buy the card, so scratching by hand and “reveal all” show the same outcome.
How much do online scratch cards cost?
Most have one fixed price. Among the cards we compared, prices run from €0.10 (Chaos Crew Scratch) to €5 (Scratch Platinum), with Wolf Gold Scratchcard at £4.
Who invented scratch cards?
John Koza and Daniel Bower of Scientific Games created the first computer-generated instant lottery ticket in 1974, and Massachusetts was the first state lottery to sell one that year.
How old do you have to be to play scratch cards?
At least 18, or the legal gambling age where you live if higher. In the UK, the minimum age for National Lottery games, including scratchcards, rose from 16 to 18 on 22 April 2021.

Important: check your local laws before you play
Online gambling laws differ from country to country, and in some places it is restricted or not permitted at all. Check that online gambling is legal where you live and that the casino accepts players from your country. You must be 18 or older (or the legal gambling age in your country, if higher). Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
