Quick answer: the most common Mega Millions numbers since the game moved to 70 white balls in October 2017 are 10, 17, 31, 3 and 42. White ball 10 has come up 87 times in 939 draws. Since the Mega Ball pool shrank to 1 to 24 in April 2025, the most common Mega Ball is 12, drawn 13 times in 163 draws. We counted every draw ourselves from the official results file. Each draw is random, though, so none of these numbers is more likely to come up next.
Last checked: 29 October 2026, when we downloaded the New York Lottery’s official Mega Millions results file and counted all 939 draws from 31 October 2017 to 27 October 2026 ourselves.
The most common Mega Millions white balls
Five white balls are drawn from 1 to 70 in every Mega Millions draw. Over 939 draws, that gives each number about 67 appearances on average. These came up most often:
| Rank | White ball | Times drawn | Share of draws |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | 87 | 9.3% |
| 2 | 17 | 84 | 8.9% |
| 3 | 31 | 81 | 8.6% |
| 4 | 3 | 80 | 8.5% |
| 5 | 42 | 79 | 8.4% |
| 6 | 14 | 78 | 8.3% |
| 7 (tie) | 38 and 43 | 77 each | 8.2% |

The most common Mega Ball numbers
The gold Mega Ball is drawn from its own pool. Until 4 April 2025 that pool ran from 1 to 25; from the draw of 8 April 2025 it runs from 1 to 24. Mixing the two would tilt the counts, so we only counted Mega Balls from the current game: 163 draws, or about 7 per number on average.
| Rank | Mega Ball | Times drawn since 8 April 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 | 13 |
| 2 (tie) | 16 and 24 | 11 each |
| 4 (tie) | 1 and 7 | 9 each |
| 6 (tie) | 2, 10 and 17 | 8 each |
With only 163 draws, a few lucky bounces make a big difference here: Mega Ball 12 is just six draws ahead of an average number.
The least common Mega Millions numbers
| Ball | Least common | Times drawn |
|---|---|---|
| White ball | 65 | 53 |
| White ball | 45, 51 and 67 | 54 each |
| White ball | 23 | 55 |
| Mega Ball (since April 2025) | 15 | 2 |
| Mega Ball (since April 2025) | 13 | 3 |
| Mega Ball (since April 2025) | 11 and 20 | 4 each |
Most common numbers in the last 12 months
In the 105 draws from 28 October 2025 to 27 October 2026, white balls 30 and 63 came up most often, 12 times each. Next were 13, 43, 48, 49, 51, 59 and 68, with 11 each. Only 43 is also in the all-time top ten, and 51 is one of the least common numbers since 2017, which shows how much a hot streak depends on where you start counting.
Overdue Mega Millions numbers
Up to the draw of 27 October 2026, white ball 69 had not been drawn for 56 draws, 52 for 35 draws and 39 for 31 draws. Mega Ball 18 had gone 89 draws without appearing, 13 had gone 77 and 19 had gone 75.
None of them is “due”. The machine doesn’t know which balls it drew last week, so a number missing for 89 draws has the same chance next time as one drawn on Tuesday. Betting otherwise is the gambler’s fallacy.
Do the most common Mega Millions numbers win more often?
No. In every draw each white ball has a 5 in 70 chance and each Mega Ball a 1 in 24 chance, whatever happened before. The tables show what has happened, not what will.
We tested this in our own count. If the draw is fair, each white ball should land about 67 times in 939 draws, give or take about 8, and across 70 numbers a spread from the low 50s to the high 80s is normal. Ours runs from 53 to 87. A standard chi-square test gave 0.75 for the white balls and 0.48 for the Mega Balls; anything above 0.05 means the spread looks like ordinary chance, with no sign that any number is favoured.
How to pick Mega Millions numbers
Every line has the same jackpot odds of 1 in 290,472,336 (70 choose 5 white balls, times 24 Mega Balls, in our own sum, which matches the official Mega Millions odds). That goes for common numbers, rare numbers, birthdays and Quick Picks alike. Before April 2025, with 25 Mega Balls, the odds were 1 in 302,575,350.

How we counted the numbers
- Data: the New York Lottery’s official file “Lottery Mega Millions Winning Numbers: Beginning 2002” on NY Open Data, also listed on Data.gov. We downloaded it on 29 October 2026; the newest draw in it was 27 October 2026.
- White balls: all 939 draws from 31 October 2017, the first draw with today’s 5-from-70 white balls (LotteryUSA, Wikipedia). Older draws used 75 white balls, so we left them out.
- Mega Ball: 163 draws from 8 April 2025, the first draw with 24 Mega Balls; the last draw with 25 was on 4 April 2025 (LotteryUSA, Wikipedia, Hoodline). In the file, 25 last appears on 4 April 2025.
- Odds and price: 1 in 290,472,336 jackpot odds and $5 per play with the multiplier included (Mega Millions, LotteryUSA).
- Every draw in the file fell on a Tuesday or a Friday. We checked it for missing draws, repeated numbers and out-of-range balls and found none. The counts, the 12-month and overdue figures, the odds sums and the chi-square test are our own maths.
Every draw is random, so no number is luckier than another. Lottery games are for adults (18+, or older where your state or country says so). If it stops being fun, see our responsible gambling guide.
