Baccarat strategy based on the maths: Banker vs Player vs Tie odds, why Banker wins despite the commission, no-commission and side bet house edges, and why systems, counting and trends don’t help.
Baccarat Strategy and Odds: What Actually Works
UltraGambler earns a commission if you sign up through some links on this page. It never changes our ratings. 18+. How we make money
Quick answer: the only baccarat strategy that changes your results is choosing the right bet. Bet on the Banker (house edge 1.06%), or the Player (1.24%) if you prefer, and skip the Tie (14.36% at 8:1) and most side bets. Banker is the best bet even after the 5% commission, because it wins more often. No betting system, scorecard pattern or card count changes those numbers in any useful way.
| Bet (8 decks) | Wins | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.86% | 1:1 less 5% commission | 1.06% |
| Player | 44.62% | 1:1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 9.52% | 8:1 | 14.36% |
| Tie (some tables) | 9.52% | 9:1 | 4.84% |

Baccarat odds: Banker vs Player vs Tie
In the standard 8-deck game (also called punto banco), the Banker hand wins 45.86% of the time, the Player 44.62% and a Tie 9.52%. When a Tie happens, Banker and Player bets are returned, so if you leave ties out, Banker wins 50.68% of the hands that are decided and Player 49.32%. Banker’s small lead comes from the drawing rules, which let the Banker hand act after seeing the Player’s third card. If you are new to the game, our guide to how to play baccarat explains the rules and the third-card table.
House edges are usually quoted per hand including ties, as in the table above. Counting only the hands that are decided, they are 1.17% on Banker and 1.36% on Player. Both ways, Banker comes out ahead.

Why is Banker the best bet, even with the commission?
A winning Banker bet pays even money less 5%, so a €10 win pays €9.50. Without that commission Banker would win more than it loses and the casino would lose money on it. The 5% turns that into a 1.06% house edge, which is still lower than the 1.24% on Player. Here is the average result of betting €100 on each:
| €100 on | Sum | Average result |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.86% × €95 won − 44.62% × €100 lost | About −€1.06 |
| Player | 44.62% × €100 won − 45.86% × €100 lost | About −€1.24 |
| Tie at 8:1 | 9.52% × €800 won − 90.48% × €100 lost | About −€14.36 |
So Banker costs about 15% less than Player over time. The difference is small, which is why betting Player is a reasonable choice too. The Tie costs more than ten times as much.
How the commission changes the Banker edge
Some casinos charge 4% instead of 5%, and that makes a real difference:
| Banker commission (8 decks) | Banker house edge |
|---|---|
| 5% (standard) | 1.06% |
| 4% | 0.60% |
| 3% | 0.14% |
| 2.75% | 0.03% |
If you find a 4% table, Banker becomes one of the cheapest bets in the casino. The number of decks matters much less: in a single-deck game, Banker is 1.01%, Player 1.29% and the Tie 15.75%.
No-commission baccarat: EZ Baccarat and Super 6
No-commission games pay Banker at even money but take the edge back another way:
| Game (8 decks) | Banker rule | Banker house edge |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Pays 1:1 less 5% | 1.06% |
| EZ Baccarat | A winning three-card Banker 7 is a push | 1.02% |
| Super 6 (and similar) | A winning Banker 6 pays 1:2 | 1.46% |
EZ Baccarat is slightly cheaper than the standard game. The “Banker 6 pays half” version is noticeably more expensive, so if you have the choice, pick a standard table or an EZ table. EZ tables also offer two side bets: Dragon 7 (a winning three-card Banker 7, pays 40:1, house edge 7.61%) and Panda 8 (a winning three-card Player 8, pays 25:1, 10.19%). The Super 6 side bet, paying 12:1 on a winning Banker 6, has a house edge of 29.98%.
Are baccarat side bets worth it?
| Side bet (8 decks) | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon Bonus, Player side | Up to 30:1, by winning margin | 2.65% |
| Dragon 7 (EZ) | 40:1 | 7.61% |
| Dragon Bonus, Banker side | Up to 30:1, by winning margin | 9.37% |
| Panda 8 (EZ) | 25:1 | 10.19% |
| Player Pair or Banker Pair | 11:1 | 10.36% |
| Perfect Pair | 25:1 | 13.03% |
| Tie | 8:1 | 14.36% |
| Super 6 | 12:1 | 29.98% |
Every side bet costs more than Banker or Player, most of them many times more. The Dragon Bonus on the Player side is the least bad. Pay tables vary between casinos, so check the table rules if you play one.
Do baccarat betting systems work?
No. Systems such as the Martingale (double after a loss), Paroli (double after a win), Fibonacci and 1-3-2-6 only change the size of your bets. Each hand has the same house edge, so the total you expect to lose is the house edge times the total you bet, whatever the order of your stakes. The Martingale also needs a huge bankroll: starting at €10, seven losses in a row mean your eighth bet is €1,280, with €2,550 at risk to win €10. Table limits or your budget usually stop you first. Our betting strategy guide explains these systems in more detail.
Can you count cards in baccarat?
Not usefully. Removing cards from the shoe changes the Banker and Player odds very little. A simple count cuts the Banker edge by only about 0.05%, from 1.06% to about 1.01%, and the main bets never swing in your favour. It isn’t worth the effort the way it can be in blackjack.
Do patterns and scorecards help?
No. Many tables show the results of past hands on boards such as the bead plate and the Big Road, and some players bet on “streaks” or “chops”. Every hand is dealt from the shoe with the same odds, and past results have no effect on the next one. A run of Banker wins doesn’t make Player “due”; that is the gambler’s fallacy.
A simple baccarat strategy
- Bet on Banker. It has the lowest house edge of the main bets. Player is a close second.
- Pick the cheapest table. A 4% commission table beats a 5% one, and standard or EZ tables beat “Banker 6 pays half” tables.
- Skip the Tie and the side bets. They cost far more.
- Bet the same amount each hand and ignore the scorecards.
- Set a budget and a time limit before you start; our gambling budget calculator shows how long your money is likely to last.
Played this way, baccarat is one of the cheapest games in the casino; compare it with others in our list of casino games with the lowest house edge.

Baccarat strategy FAQs
What is the best strategy in baccarat?
Bet on the Banker, at a table with the lowest commission you can find, and skip the Tie and side bets. That keeps the house edge at about 1.06% or less.
Is it better to bet Banker or Player?
Banker. Even after the 5% commission its house edge is 1.06%, against 1.24% for Player.
What are the odds of a tie in baccarat?
About 9.52% of hands, roughly 1 in 10.5. At 8:1 the Tie bet has a house edge of 14.36%; at 9:1 it is 4.84%.
Does the Martingale work in baccarat?
No. It changes your bet sizes, not the house edge, and a losing streak can hit the table limit or your budget before you win back your losses.
Is no-commission baccarat better?
It depends on the rule. EZ Baccarat (1.02% on Banker) is slightly better than the standard game, but tables where a Banker 6 pays half (1.46%) are worse.
