Quick answer: Ultimate Texas Hold’em is a casino poker game you play against the dealer, not other players. You make equal Ante and Blind bets, then get one chance to add a Play bet: 3x or 4x your Ante before the flop, 2x after the flop, or 1x after the river (or fold). The dealer needs a pair or better to qualify. With the best strategy the house edge is about 2.19% of your Ante, which works out at about 0.53% of everything you bet. The optional Trips side bet costs from 0.90% to 6.18%, depending on the pay table.

How to play Ultimate Texas Hold’em
- Place your Ante and Blind. They must be the same size. You can also add a Trips bet.
- Look at your two cards. Check, or make a Play bet of 3x or 4x your Ante.
- The flop. Three shared cards are dealt. If you checked, you can now bet 2x your Ante or check again.
- The turn and river. The last two shared cards are dealt together. If you still haven’t bet, you must bet 1x your Ante or fold. Folding loses your Ante and Blind.
- Showdown. You and the dealer each make the best five-card hand from your two cards and the five shared cards.
You only get one Play bet per hand: once you have made it, you just check to the end. Hands rank as in normal poker, so a flush beats a straight; see our poker hand rankings. You get three chances to bet, but the later you bet, the less you can bet.

How does Ultimate Texas Hold’em pay?
The Play bet pays even money, the Ante pays even money only when the dealer qualifies, and the Blind pays only on a strong winning hand:
| Result | Ante | Blind | Play |
|---|---|---|---|
| You fold | Loses | Loses | No bet |
| You win, dealer qualifies | Pays 1:1 | Pays the Blind table | Pays 1:1 |
| You win, dealer doesn’t qualify | Returned | Pays the Blind table | Pays 1:1 |
| Tie | Returned | Returned | Returned |
| Dealer wins, dealer qualifies | Loses | Loses | Loses |
| Dealer wins, dealer doesn’t qualify | Returned | Loses | Loses |
So the dealer failing to qualify only saves your Ante. The Blind pays on these winning hands:
| Your winning hand | Blind pays |
|---|---|
| Royal flush | 500:1 |
| Straight flush | 50:1 |
| Four of a kind | 10:1 |
| Full house | 3:1 |
| Flush | 3:2 |
| Straight | 1:1 (at most tables) |
| Anything lower | Returned |
A worked example
You bet £10 Ante, £10 Blind and £5 Trips at a table paying 7:1 on a flush, and get A♠ K♠. That is a 4x hand, so you bet £40 Play. The board comes Q♠ 7♠ 2♦ 9♣ 3♠: you have a flush. The dealer has 7♥ 5♦, a pair of sevens, so qualifies and loses. You win £10 on the Ante, £40 on the Play, £15 on the Blind (3:2) and £35 on Trips (7:1): £100 profit on £65 staked. If the dealer had held J♥ 5♦ (no pair), the Ante would have been returned and everything else would still pay: £90 profit.
If instead you check all the way and fold on the river, you lose £20 (Ante and Blind), and the £5 Trips bet loses too unless your cards make three of a kind or better.
What is the best Ultimate Texas Hold’em strategy?
The simplest strong strategy is the Wizard of Odds card. It never bets 3x: you either bet 4x before the flop or check.
Before the flop, bet 4x with:
- A pair of threes or better (check with a pair of twos).
- Any ace.
- Any suited king, or K-5 or better unsuited.
- Q-6 or better suited, or Q-8 or better unsuited.
- J-8 or better suited, or J-10 unsuited.
After the flop, bet 2x with: two pair or better; a hidden pair (one that uses at least one of your own cards), except pocket twos; or four to a flush where your own card in that suit is a 10 or higher. Otherwise check.
After the river, bet 1x with: a hidden pair or better, or when fewer than 21 of the unseen cards would give the dealer a hand that beats you. Otherwise fold. Counting those cards is the same “outs” idea we explain in poker maths.
Bluffing and reading opponents don’t help here, because the dealer follows fixed rules. If you want to beat other players, that is a different game; see how to win at poker.
Trips pay tables and house edge
Trips pays if your final hand is three of a kind or better, whatever the dealer has, and it still pays if you fold. Casinos choose the pay table, and the difference is big:
| Royal flush | Straight flush | Four of a kind | Full house | Flush | Straight | Three of a kind | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50:1 | 40:1 | 30:1 | 9:1 | 7:1 | 4:1 | 3:1 | 0.90% |
| 50:1 | 40:1 | 30:1 | 8:1 | 6:1 | 5:1 | 3:1 | 1.90% |
| 50:1 | 40:1 | 20:1 | 7:1 | 6:1 | 5:1 | 3:1 | 6.18% |
At the full 9-7-4 table, Trips is one of the cheapest bets in the casino. At the 20-7-6-5 table it costs almost seven times as much, so read the felt or the game rules first.
Some tables add other side bets, such as a progressive jackpot bet that pays the full meter for a royal flush, or a Bad Beat bonus that pays when you lose with a very strong hand. Their pay tables vary by casino.
What is the house edge in Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
With perfect strategy, about 2.19% of your Ante. Because you often bet much more than your Ante (the Blind plus a Play bet of up to 4x), that is only about 0.53% of all the money you put on the table, a figure called the element of risk. Some sites quote 0.53% as the house edge, but it measures something different.
Measured the same way, that beats Three Card Poker (3.37% of the Ante, 2.01% of everything bet) and Let It Ride (2.85% of everything bet). Our list of casino games with the lowest house edge compares more games. No betting system changes these numbers, and a run of bad hands doesn’t make a good one “due”; see the gambler’s fallacy.
Who invented Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
Roger Snow created the game at Shuffle Master, working with the mathematician Eliot Frome. It started as an electronic multi-player game before becoming a live table game. Shuffle Master (by then SHFL Entertainment) was bought by Bally Technologies in November 2013, Bally by Scientific Games in November 2014, and Scientific Games renamed itself Light & Wonder in April 2022, which owns the game today.

Ultimate Texas Hold’em FAQs
What is the best strategy for Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
Bet 4x before the flop with a pair of threes or better, any ace and the stronger king, queen and jack hands; bet 2x after the flop with two pair or a hidden pair; bet 1x after the river with a hidden pair or when fewer than 21 cards beat you. Otherwise check, and fold on the river.
Should you ever bet 3x before the flop?
No. The Wizard of Odds strategy bets 4x or checks. A hand good enough to raise is good enough to raise the maximum.
What does the dealer need to qualify?
A pair or better. If the dealer doesn’t qualify, your Ante is returned, and the Play and Blind bets are settled as normal.
What does the Blind bet pay?
Only when you win: 500:1 for a royal flush, 50:1 for a straight flush, 10:1 for four of a kind, 3:1 for a full house, 3:2 for a flush and usually 1:1 for a straight. A smaller winning hand returns it, and a losing hand loses it.
What is the house edge in Ultimate Texas Hold’em?
About 2.19% of the Ante with perfect strategy, or 0.53% of everything you bet. The Trips side bet ranges from 0.90% to 6.18% depending on the pay table.
