Quick answer: Top Dollar is IGT’s classic 3-reel dollar slot, famous for a bonus that makes up to four cash offers: you take one or try again, and the fourth is paid automatically. The original is a land-based machine; online, IGT’s Double Top Dollar has the same offer bonus and a 96.24% RTP. Below we explain how the bonus works, when to accept an offer, and why dollar slots pay back more than penny slots in land-based casinos.

Top Dollar is built on IGT’s classic reel games such as Double Diamond and Triple Diamond: bars, sevens and diamonds on three reels. What makes it different is the Top Dollar symbol, which unlocks the offer bonus.

How does the Top Dollar bonus work?
You land the Top Dollar symbol at a qualifying bet and get up to four cash offers, one at a time. You can take any offer or try again, and the fourth is paid automatically.
- Play the maximum credits. On the classic machine the bonus needs a max-credit bet, so check the qualifying bet on the machine before you play.
- Land the Top Dollar symbol on the payline to trigger the bonus.
- Receive an offer. The screen shows a credit prize. You can take it, which ends the bonus, or try again for a new offer.
- Up to four offers. Each new offer can be higher or lower than the last. If you reach the fourth offer, you must accept it.
When should you accept an offer?
Take an offer when it is clearly good for your bet: later offers can be higher or lower than earlier ones, so turning down a strong early offer can cost you. Some Top Dollar games show a recommendation on screen, such as “best bet: take offer” or “try again”, and following it is the simplest approach. Whatever you choose, the bonus is random: no pattern in earlier offers predicts the next one.
What other classic dollar slots are there?
These IGT machines are fixtures on land-based casino floors, often at $1 per credit:

Wheel of Fortune: one of the best-known slot brands ever, with a spinning bonus wheel on top of the cabinet. Many versions are linked to a progressive jackpot.

Double Diamond: the simple three-reel classic Top Dollar grew out of. The Double Diamond symbol is wild and doubles wins it completes.

Triple Red Hot 7s: another three-reel IGT favourite, where lining up the red sevens pays the most. Outside IGT, Aristocrat’s Asian-themed Lucky 88 is another land-based classic. For something newer, Bluberi’s Devil’s Lock (February 2023) has 40 paylines and four jackpots, from Mini to Grand.
Playing for $1 a spin online
Online slots don’t come in fixed “dollar” denominations. Instead you choose your stake, so you can play almost any slot for $1 a spin. Good options include:
- Book of Dead (Play’n GO): bets from $0.01 to $100, 96.21% default RTP and a 5,000x top win from its expanding-symbol free spins.
- Mega Moolah (Microgaming): bets from $0.25 to $6.25 with four progressive jackpots. A $1 spin is a typical stake for jackpot hunters.
- Double Top Dollar (IGT): the online version of the Top Dollar bonus, at 96.24% RTP.
For lower stakes, see our 1 cent slots guide.
Do dollar slots pay better than penny slots?
Yes, in land-based casinos. Nevada figures show penny slots keep about 11% of what’s wagered, against about 6% for dollar slots (Clark County in 2012, downtown Las Vegas in 2025), which is one reason dollar slots have a loyal following. Online it works differently: a slot’s RTP is the same whatever you stake, so a $1 spin and a $0.10 spin on the same game have the same expected return. What changes is how fast you can win, or lose, your budget.
A better payback percentage doesn’t mean a cheaper session, though. We worked out 100 spins on each type of machine, using the downtown Las Vegas figures for 2025:
| Machine | Example bet per spin | Total bet over 100 spins | Casino keeps | Average loss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penny slot | $0.50 (50 lines at 1¢) | $50 | 10.95% | $5.48 |
| Dollar slot | $3 (3 credits at $1) | $300 | 5.93% | $17.79 |
Per dollar wagered, the dollar machine is almost twice as good. Per spin, it costs over three times as much because each spin is six times bigger. So play dollar slots if you were going to bet that much anyway, not to save money.
Tips for playing dollar slots
- Set a budget in spins, not dollars. At $1 a spin, 100 spins is $100. Decide your number before you start.
- Bet max only when it matters. On machines like Top Dollar, the bonus needs max credits, so play max or choose a cheaper machine.
- Check the RTP online. The game’s info screen shows the version your casino runs.
- Walk away on a win. There’s no “hot” machine; the next spin is always random.

Last checked: 12 October 2026, when we worked out the cost of 100 spins on penny and dollar machines ourselves from the Nevada hold figures. The other facts above were last checked against their sources on 7 October 2026. Land-based payback is set by each casino, and online casinos can run different RTP versions, so check the machine’s help screen or the game’s info screen before you play.
