What is the house edge?

The house edge is the casino’s average profit on each bet, shown as a percentage. A 2.70% edge means that over many bets you lose about $2.70 for every $100 wagered on average. It is the flip side of RTP: a slot with a 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. Short sessions can still go either way.

The low-edge games explained

Blackjack

With basic strategy, blackjack can have an edge under 1%, and as low as about 0.28% with liberal rules. Rules matter: games that pay 6:5 for a blackjack instead of 3:2 have a much higher edge.

Video poker

Full-pay Jacks or Better (9/6) has a 0.46% edge with perfect strategy. Check the paytable: lower-paying versions raise the edge.

Baccarat

New to the game? Read how to play baccarat for the full rules and odds, then our baccarat strategy guide for commission rates, side bets and why betting systems don’t help.

The Banker bet has a 1.06% edge after commission, and the Player bet 1.24%. The Tie bet is 14.36%, so skip it.

Craps

Pass Line (1.41%) and Don’t Pass (1.36%) are the best bets. Many of the other bets on the table carry much higher edges.

Roulette

European roulette, with a single zero, has a 2.70% edge. American roulette adds a double zero and rises to 5.26%. See our roulette odds guide.

Sic Bo

The Small and Big bets have a 2.78% edge, but other Sic Bo bets go much higher. See our Sic Bo guide.
