Quick answer: Spanish 21 is a blackjack variant played with “Spanish” decks that have all the number 10s removed (picture cards stay). Losing those 10s hurts the player, so the game gives a lot back: your blackjack and your 21 always win, five-card and other bonus 21s pay extra, and you can double on any number of cards and surrender late. With basic strategy for this game, the house edge is about 0.4% when the dealer stands on soft 17 and about 0.8% when the dealer hits it (sources put it at 0.37–0.40% and 0.76–0.80%).

How is Spanish 21 different from blackjack?

The basic play is the same as standard blackjack: beat the dealer without going over 21, picture cards count 10, aces 1 or 11. If you’re new to the game, start with our blackjack rules guide. The differences are in the deck and the extra player-friendly rules.

The bonus payouts

Suited 7-7-7 when the dealer shows a 7$1,000 on bets of $5–$24; $5,000 on $25 or more (where offered)

Bonuses don’t apply to doubled hands. Sources differ on split hands: some rule sets pay bonuses on them and many casinos don’t, so check the table rules.

Extra player options

  • Double on any number of cards, not just your first two (some jurisdictions limit this).
  • Double down rescue: after doubling, you can take back the doubled part of your bet and forfeit only the original stake.
  • Late surrender on your first two cards.
  • Resplit aces, typically up to four hands.

Why isn’t normal blackjack strategy enough for Spanish 21?

With fewer 10s in the deck and bonus payouts available, some decisions change (for example, hitting toward a five-card 21). Spanish 21 has its own basic strategy charts, and using a standard blackjack chart costs you money. Two practical points:

  • Look for tables where the dealer stands on soft 17: the house edge is roughly half that of hit-soft-17 tables.
  • Learn a Spanish 21-specific chart before playing seriously. Without it, the game’s low house edge doesn’t apply to you.
  • Our card counting guide explains why 10s matter so much in blackjack, which is why removing them changes the game. For other games with a low house edge, see our low house edge games.

How much do the missing 10s cost you?

We worked this out for an eight-deck shoe. A normal shoe has 416 cards, and 128 of them are worth 10 (tens, jacks, queens and kings). A Spanish shoe has 384 cards and only 96 worth 10, because the 32 number 10s are gone. A blackjack needs an ace and a 10-value card in either order, so its chance is 2 × (aces ÷ cards) × (10-value cards ÷ cards left).

Normal shoe (8 decks)Spanish shoe (8 decks)
Cards worth 10128 of 416 (30.8%)96 of 384 (25.0%)
Chance of a blackjack2 × 32/416 × 128/415 = 4.75%2 × 32/384 × 96/383 = 4.18%

Fewer blackjacks is only part of it. With fewer 10s, your doubles on 10 and 11 also land on a 10 less often. The bonus payouts and extra options exist to win that value back.

What does the soft 17 rule mean in money? Average cost = stake × hands × house edge. As an example, at £10 a hand for 60 hands you stake £600:

Table ruleHouse edgeAverage cost of £600 staked
Dealer stands on soft 17About 0.4%£600 × 0.4% = about £2.40
Dealer hits soft 17About 0.8%£600 × 0.8% = about £4.80
Long-run averages, assuming you follow a Spanish 21 strategy chart. Real hand rates vary by table.

How we checked this

  • Rules, bonus payouts, the suited 7-7-7 Super Bonus and double down rescue: Wizard of Odds and Wikipedia. The two differ on bonuses for split hands, so we say so.
  • House edge by soft 17 rule: Wizard of Odds (0.40% and 0.76%) and Wikipedia (0.37–0.38% and 0.78–0.80%). We round to about 0.4% and 0.8%.
  • Masque Publishing owns the Spanish 21 trademark: Wikipedia and the US trademark record.
  • Our maths: the share of 10-value cards, the blackjack chances and the cost of £600 staked are our own calculations.

Last checked: 13 October 2026, when we worked out the blackjack chances and the cost per £600 staked ourselves and checked the other figures against at least two independent sources.

Spanish 21 FAQ

Why are the 10s removed in Spanish 21?

Removing the four number 10s from each deck shifts the odds toward the house. The game compensates with player-friendly rules and bonus payouts, which bring the house edge back down to around 0.4–0.8%.

Does a player blackjack beat a dealer blackjack in Spanish 21?

Yes. A player blackjack always wins and pays 3:2, and a player 21 always beats a dealer 21.

Is Spanish 21 better than regular blackjack?

It can be similar or slightly better at a stand-on-soft-17 table if you use the correct Spanish 21 strategy. Played with ordinary blackjack strategy, it can be worse.
